Tingwei Li's interdisciplinary practice weaves together drawing, performance, video, and found objects to explore the complexities of personal identity within the context of collective memory and digital culture. Her work examines how consumer society and information overload reshape human consciousness and behavior, often leading to a pursuit of self-optimization and a 'flexible ego' molded by marketing-driven environments.
In her video works, Li constructs intricate, non-linear narratives that intertwine real events with enigmatic elements, revealing multiple layers of meaning. What may appear as a Theatre of the Absurd is, in fact, a reflection of reality, crafted through diverse visual styles, textures, and approaches rooted in perceptual psychology. Utilizing 3D modeling, she offers viewers an opportunity to delve into the nuanced details of rapidly evolving societal perceptions, challenging established beliefs and shedding light on pressing social issues.
Through this fusion of mediums and concepts, Li's work functions as a form of mental archaeology, delving into the mechanisms of control and self-representation. She strives to create spaces for reflection and dialogue, illuminating the subtle forces that shape our cognitive processes, physicality, and societal behaviors in the digital age.
